Design and technology is an inspiring and practical subject. Children use creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.
In Early Years, KS1 and KS2 children learn a wide range of practical skills which they can use to develop their own designs. Work is often linked to other areas of the curriculum and children will create simple prototypes which they will use to improve and develop their designs. Work in DT may be blocked into one week to allow a specific focus on DT skills including the design stage, testing stage and evaluation, where it is felt this supports the organisation and learning in big projects.
